Do I need a Lintel?

My builder has knocked a doorway from the side of the house into the new garage. I noticed there was no lintel above the new doorway and he said it doesn't need one as the wooden frame acts as one (the wooden door surround etc).

This doesn't sound correct to me but Im not a builder. Can anyone confirm?

Every opening needs a support independent of the frame

This should need building control approval too. Has your builder told you that?

He mentioned something at the start about getting it signed off by building regs or something. I'll mention it to him.

Is there a chance this should have needed planning permission? It's a semi detached house which now has the garage on the side of the house instead of at the back of the garden??

Door ways into garages from a house needs proper fire protection.
