Do insurance companies insure new cars without a registration number?

I have placed an order for a new GR86 with Toyota Online, but they want me to insure the vehicle before it is registered so that they can tax it at the same time, but my insurance company NFU Mutual naturally require the registration number. Toyota Online say that many insurance companies will insure without the registration of a new vehicle, is that true?

Have a thought that some specialist insurance companies will insure against a VIN number.

Most car dealers give a weeks insurance that allows them to tax a new vehicle for an owner.

What @Mottie said, but my motorbike insurance accepted the vin before I registered the bike.
They then changed to the reg. number incredibly without any charge
