Hi,
I am looking to put double/french doors into an archway at the bottom of our stairs leading into the lounge. The existing is a brick wall at one end and the end of the wall between the lounge and stairway.
The space is 1800mm wide x 2160mm high.
The width of the wall it will butt up to is 120mm (5").
I was going to build in a small stud wall with a space to suit standard door widths.
But...
I'm looking to maximize the door space to make it easier to get furniture upstairs when nessesary. For this reason my idea is to go for bespoke door sizes.
I will need to fit a timber door lining first in order to give the internal measurements for the bespoke doors.
So my questions are:
  1. Can I fix the door lining directly to the wall?
  2. or should I build it out a bit with stud walling?
  3. What timber should I use for the lining? Given that it needs to fit to a 120mm thick wall at one end.
Any ideas/pointers greatly appreciated.
