I have some aluminium frames which are a good 20 years old - They still work but the glass has blown on a few of the panels - This has got worse over the last five years and was noticeable ten years ago

Speaking to glass manufacturers they are looking at 3K for supply of the glass only plus vat and delivery

Is there any way these can be saved or do I need to use my emergency funds to replace them

I have always been happy with West End Glass in Ruislip Gardens (HA4).

I recently had to replace a couple of very small double glazed units for a customer, they were significantly cheaper than anyone else. That said, I paid cash and the glass did not need to be toughened.

By law your floor to ceiling units need to be toughened glass. That adds a delay (the glass needs to be sent off to be toughened), and obviously increases the cost.

There are youtube videos that show you how take double glazed units apart and put them back together but I am not convinced that they would not blow again prematurely

There are companies around, who claim to be able to demist, and salvage existing glass panels. It might be worth asking one for a quote.

Your panels are quite big. I paid several hundred each for some large new sealed panels in tempered glass, and about double for laminated where I wanted burglar resistance.

Small panes for windows were less than £100 each.

Ask around for recommendations. There will be at least one local specialist or firm that mends and reglazes patio doors and plastic windows, there is a constant demand and you do not need a large company. Mine were done by a local man who called his son in to help lift the heavy ones.

You do not need to have them all done in one go.

Check those online prices. You are going to come in way under £3K.

A local company replaced a few units for me.
A 1M x 2M approx for sliding patio door was about £150 fitted. Cheaper than I could buy online myself.
Manchester and a couple of years ago.

Try a local company that does window repairs

3K seems a bit high on Supply only to me ....

AND stay away from those who claim to be able to demist/repair them - firstly you'd never get rid of the white staining , secondly they would no longer be sealed units and most of those are toughened so they'd not be able to drill them , which is what the ' repair ' is

£3k sounds a lot.

Ive just bought 7 units to go in 2no casement windows cost was £250 incl VAT mixture of annealed and tough. A rated

whereabouts are you?

I or others might be able to give some contacts -perhaps from outside London and thus cheaper.

maybe try cloudy to clear for a supply fit price.

do you have the sizes / spec?
why is the price supply only? - measuring and fitting is not necessarily straightforward.

I wouldn’t trust a builder to get it right,

BTW broken down units have a poor U value, so new double glazing as long as it’s not too thin, in soft coat low e, warm edge and argon will be massively better thermally.

The nationl company that carried out that demisting repair by drilling and cleaning out soon disappeared and ironically became the Cloudy2Clear franchise strangely enough replacing misted units

Unfortunately the practice still continues , I was following a sign written van the other day advertising the demisting ' repair '

Don't know what Ronnie thinks but looking at the age of those frames I would hazard a guess at those units being 6/6/6 plate, if so and if possible on the glass thickness calculator I'd be inclined to change to 4mm glass as it all has to be toughened anyway, the top openers can be float glass so long as they are above 1500mm from ground level otherwise being within 300mm of a door they also need to be toughened, when I say toughened I mean safety glass, laminated or toughened

Not sure about thickness but do suspect 6mm glass and they also look like they are very close to having to be 6mm again, would need a visible glass size to confirm though.
The side panels could certainly be 4mm tough glass though

Hi

I put the size 1400MM * 2400MM 6mm glass and the price is £932 for the glass only - Is there any reason it is so expensive - I wonder if it is worth getting new doors completely at these kind of prices

Also I am near Edgware London - Can try watford or outside london if thats a possibility
