Double Slotting This Fence?

I want to double-slot this fence for privacy.

Is there something used to keep the gaps between the slots consistent and what length of nails would I need?

Just use a spacer of the desired width. I would consider using screws rather than banging away at it with a hammer.

whilst spacers are a brilliant idea i fully agree with-------- the fact the timber vary in size between batches and moisture content it will be needing constant checking and adjustment about every third one to check over and under measurements

Why can you not just centre the new timbers, on the centres of the existing gaps?
