Downlights stopped working

Hi

Hoping for a clue.

All 5 Down lights in hall stopped working suddenly after fine for 8 yrs.

As far as I can see it’s 1 transformer (35-105w 240 to 11.5v) with 5 20w halogens in parallel (daisy chain?)

I assumed transformer issue so replaced like for like no joy.

When I switch light switch I register a current at all lamp fixtures and no current when switched off ( I haven’t got a multimeter).

The smoke alarm may be powered from this ring I’m not sure (battery and mains).

What else could it be?

The circuit breaker hasn’t switched..

Sounds a Strange one, have you got anything you could temporary wire in using the power input into the Transformer such as a light just to confirm it is live?

What have you used to determine this 'current' exists, if you haven't got a multimeter?

One possibility - old transformer failed and destroyed all of the lamps. Try replacing at least one of them.

It is a waste of money to randomly replace items without first checking they are faulty. Money would have been better spent on a multimeter so you could have diagnosed the fault.

It won't be a ring. Rings are only normally used on power circuits.

There are several things it could be. How about a poor connection at the first lamp. You can test individual lamps with a multimeter. You can check input voltage to the power supply (not a transformer by the way) with a multimeter. You can't check the output voltage as the frequency will be too high, but you can check the continuity of all the wiring. Guess you need to buy that multimeter.
