Downpipe has disconnected from gutter

Hi all just after a bit of advice.

Our drain that was used for the guttering downpipe and waste from the washing machine has blocked, but to be able to clear the blockage we had to cut the bottom section of the downpipe (just above the shoe) as it was resting on the metal grid covering the drain and there was no way of moving either the pipe or the drain grid (the drain is set below the level of the concrete by about 10”)

Once we’d cut it off the whole pipe just came away from the guttering. It looks like it was just being propped up at ground level.

How should the downpipe be attached to the gutter? It there a clip or should it be solvent or something?

I’ve checked the downpipe at the front of the house and this is the same, there’s no clearance between the shoe and the drain.

a work around if the pipe still slips is to drill a tiny hole through the clip and into the pipe then insert a small stainless steel self tapping screw.

Yeah there are clips along the whole length but it doesn’t seem to hold it up so the screw idea is a bit of obvious genius thanks, I’ll five it a go.

sva, send photos of the pipes. what you describe would be well unusual - the down pipes would have been wind blown off before now with no clips.
assume these are plastic pipes?

the down pipe is not attached to the gutter outlet - usuly thers a well fixed swans neck just below rhe outlet.
dont try an attach the down pipe to any outlet in any material.

dont go drillin an screwin into the pipe - any snagged debris will create a blockage an a trickle leak. at every clip.

tighten up the distance btween the clip ears an secure them with a long screw intoa plug.

There are clips attached, but they don’t seem to hold enough to stop any vertical movement (see photos above)

There’s no swan neck, it’s just a straight drop from the gutter outlet

angling off the outlet like that needs packers behind the clip ears - we us small 15mm copper offcuts. but dont bother messin with it.

with tighter centres drill new plastic plug holes at a slight angle an use longer ss screws to pull the clips tighter.
the plugs must be in the masonry behind the dash an render.

if you dont want to work off a ladder then force the down pipe back up - its only dropped about 25mm an drill an screw two clips one about 300mm from the bottom an the other about 500mm higher.

but first hack off the little angled stretchers at the back of the clips. this will allow you to get a tighter grip.

As long as you use short 12mm or so screws I have never had a problem with snagging.
