Hi all,

We have had a funny smell in the house for a while and couldn’t find the source. Finally checked under the house only to find a big puddle of water under the floor.

got a plumber out who found that the outside drain was blocked and due to a cracked drain gully the excess water was going back under the house.

Now this is the drain from the kitchen including the dishwasher, so all the food waste was being dumped under the house.

the smell then got worse as the water dissipated with the drain unblocked, leaving the waste. I have been under the house and managed to get as much of the waste as I could and disposed of and the smell has gone but I am worried that it might get worse again.

Any thoughts on what could be done to clean or disinfect below the house would be much appreciated.

Assuming the root cause has been fixed then it should be fine

However if you wanted to disinfect just in case then a 50/50 dilute solution of standard household bleach with water applied with a pressure sprayer would be the first thing i would try.

Failing that you could try something called BAC-50,its a biocide and general purpose disinfectant that needs to be diluted with water.

It goes along way when diluted but costs about 15 quid per litre though so id try a bottle of household bleach for a couple of quid and see if that helps first

Dont forget to wear gloves/mask/goggles when applying either

Only had this problem once shortly after moving in because unbeknowns to me the batty woman who lived there previously was putting all kinds of unmentionables and wretched wet wipes down the toilet and the drain finally gave up. The other thing that folk do (until they get a £400 bill) is put fat down the kitchen sink while it is still warm rather than wrapping it and putting it in the bin. The only other problem I have seen was next door neighbour a few years ago who had a tree growing quite close to a drain cover, I did warn her but she ignored me until the day came and she forked out £450 to have the drain unblocked and the tree roots plus tree removed from the scene.
