Dry wall broken round window, best way to fix?

Hi All

I have a quick question and I would like to hear your thoughts!

Is there a good way to fix this issue / patch it up, rather than removing the drywall and replacing?

The previous owners tried to fit a net curtain. Unfortunately the top part of the plasterboard failed. The top corner and was left pushed in I have removed it, leaving a cavity, but I am unsure what is the best solution without making it worse! I have added two images below!

As a DIY job, one coat plaster would be a fair choice of material to use.
There are other methods that would require a number of different materials.

Thanks for that was thinking about plastering in wasn't sure if should keep the cavity or not! Think I will do as you suggest!!

Is that wall and the reveal dot and dabbed plaster board?

Ah yes probably is are you thinking dot and dab that section back in?

If there is a cavity behind the board you could fix (plug & screw) a bit of backing wood in there and then pull the cavity out to a suitable depth for skimming. The wood would take any new rail bracket fixings.
