Electric issue

Hi
I think this is the right place where i should discuss this..
I was putting a in line switch to lamp cord and i wired red wire to switch and fix them.. then when i plugged it in.. nothing but a little spark.
I think i should try this again with black wire

(the green wire have nothing to do with this)

I think this might be better asked in the Electrics - non UK forum. Would also be good to see a photo of the work in question.

I thought the USA colours for appliances were black (phase), silver, (neutral) and green (earth)?
In which case the black needs to be switched (single pole switch).
