after experiencing problems with my engine management light coming on at about 70 mph on my astra 1.7 diesel 1999 i had it checked at a garage on there computer and they say it is reading critical malfunction and suggesting the fuel pump is on its way out (a £1000 repair job).
this problem has been happening for about a year and otherwise the car is running sweet as a nut, any suggestions of anything else to check first before changing the fuel pump?.

Modern diesel fuel line systems are not that easy. They are pressurised... If you look in your owner's manual under "What to do if you drain the tank", it will have a big box saying

"WARNING! If you empty the fuel tank on a diesel you must have the car towed to the nearest Vauxhall garage to have the fuel system repressurised!"

So, your best bet is to just shop around at different garages (preferably diesel specialists or Vauxhall franchises - the latter has more comeback than an indy). See what their differing opinions are, just in case it is something else. But I doubt any work on fuelling will be DIY on this car.
