Hi,

I was wondering whether someone may be able to advise on this please. I recently was awarded a grant from one of those government backed schemes for free home improvement for insulation. It was for front of house insulation using EPS insulation foam blocks. The builders have started the work and a member of public who claimed to be a builder told me earlier this week that the work being done is not being done correctly which has me confused and worried. I have attached some pictures.

So bascially the EPS blocks have been put up. They sanded it down and put base coat on. It has been left to dry for two days and the builders will continue tomorrow working. What the member of public who spoke to me said was that there is no mechanical fixings put into the blocks (EPS insulation anchors) which need to be drilled in, foamed and covered and the outer basecoat on the foam blocks has no mesh installed inside. From what I recall some mesh was used in the corners of the window but he said it needs to be used everywhere but only when the basecoat is wet and it needs a 2 pass basecoat coating. He seems to think its too late now to put mesh on without removing everything and he said it will start to crack within a year ot two and there is likely to be unstable movement of the blocks due to no plastic anchors drilled in and installed. Does the gentleman have any valid point? I have got this work done from a company who is government backed trustmark for over 10 years and finding all this hard to believe. What do you guys reckon?

Thanks.

Adam

There may possibly be methods which require no mechanical fixings but any systems I've ever looked at always had mechanical fixings for each sheet of insulation then a mesh over the whole lot prior to rendering. You should ask to see the technical data sheets and installation documents for that brand of insulation.

I agree. I couldn't get that information from them. I do believe I have been ripped off. Essentially a cowboys job but then again its being done free of charge from a government backed scheme.
