I recently cut back a hedge at the boundary of my property and uncovered this BT-branded junction box:

The reason it has a cut black wire coming out of it is, I think, because this house used to be the show home for the development (15 years ago), and there was an office in the garage during the sale phase. I imagine the wire was for the phones there.

The problem is that the wires for this box are pretty precarious, as they loop untidily towards the pavement. Also, the covering screw was loose, so I tightened it, but I peeked inside first. Lots of insects:

I would like the junction box replaced, and the wires pinned up the (nearby) vertical fence post, so they don't get snagged.

A few questions:
  1. What is this box called?
  2. On the assumption that this isn't something I should be doing myself, should I be getting an independent phone tech in to do it, or do I have to go through BT?
  3. We get landline/broadband through TalkTalk - does this affect the answer above?

Report it to OpenReach as necessary External Network Relocation ( say it is necessary to avoid future damage )

The following options are available on the 0800 023 2023 number:

  • Reporting External Damage (Option 1)
  • Reporting graffiti on our external network (i.e. cabinets), 0800 023 2023 (Option 1)
  • Information about contacting Openreach with general enquiries and complaints (Option 4)
  • External Network Relocation (Option 2,Option 2)
(To Move or Remove Openreach poles, cables, joint boxes or BT equipment)
  • Wayleaves (Option 2, then Option 3)

Put the lid back on and plant a shrub to hide.

ps and forget about it, its state is a BT problem, not yours

Thanks for the responses, esp. bernardgreen.

I would hide it and forget about it, but now the wire is not constrained by the hedge, it is liable to loop out along pavement. Not only is this a potential trip hazard, but if it gets caught in a buggy and snagged it'll knock my phone and internet out. So I'd rather pre-empt this problem.

Never heard of BT doing anything preemptive, even the Post Office was not that advanced in their thinking. Too busy sitting in the local cafe both morning and afternoon

A- BT66
B- if the wires are not corroded leave it alone.
C- its the property of BT Openreach if you get them to move it tell them to duct it to the house this way if you have any problems in the future with the cable they can just pull a new one in instead of digging up your garden/driveway.
