Facebook - People you may know

I'm not really a Facebook user, I do have an account, but only so I can take a look in some specialist groups. I have no information about me on the site, no photo(s) just a very minimal account.....

So why does it inundate me on the rare occasions I do go to the site, with 'People you may know', obvious foreigners from all over the world of all colours?

The more information you share about yourself will cause the 'people you might know' suggestions to increase in accuracy and the opposite is also true, if you share little the results will be inaccurate. You can easily find out everything Facebook knows about you nowadays.

Thanks, that sort of explains the peculiar suggestions. I wonder if there is a way to turn the suggestions off?
