I can see the facia’s are wood so if I remove those and leave the soffits there?Why not do it properly and remove the existing facias before replacing them with the UPVC? The correct fixings are of course annulated stainless steel nails with plastic heads - Wickes sell them.
Yes, that would be my plan - no worries about painting or rot. I can't see if there are any ventilation holes though, might want to consider that, always good to have roof ventilation but make it insect proof if you do. Looks like asbestos on my screen . Tap it gently you'll know weather it's wood or not
