We have had an old gas warm air boiler decommissioned and removed. The boiler was huge and would suck warm air in, over a flame and then pump it downwards through the vent system into each room in the house. Now the boiler has gone we have a HUGE hole to fill in the utility room room. It’s approx 700x700 and about 600mm deep.

Was thinking of removing the concrete slab the boiler was sat on and backfilling the hole with MOT/ hardcore and anything else I can find until just below floor lever before levelling with concrete.

Should I line the hole with a moisture resistant thick PVC liner to avoid any moisture or damp? Should I insulate? Should I remove the metal liner in the hole (beginning of the vent system) as I’m not sure it will take the weight of a load of hardcore? God knows what’s supporting it from
Underneath!

TIA for any support or advice.
