Fitting Anti Jemmy Claws / Dog Bolt Hinges to UPVC Doors

Hi everyone,

I've tried to find info on this topic, but I've not had any luck. Due to a recent local burglary at a neighbour's property, I've become very security conscience and need your help and advice.

Our home has upvc doors. The front door is composite/upvc. We also have two opening upvc patio doors which open outwards into the garden.

So the first thing I've changed for all the doors is the basic euro cylinder locks to anti-snap ABS Avocet (3 star diamond locks). I've also added burglar alarm door sensors.

However, one of the main worries I still have is that I've been told by my neighbour that my patio doors are still insecure because the hinges are on the outwards which means that burglars can simply remove the hinges from the outside and remove the full doors.

So after reading up, I've bought 4 x Anti Jemmy / Dog Bolt Hinges that look like these:-

From what I've read online, if a thief was successful in removing the door hinges, they would not be able to remove the doors as the attached claws would sink into the frame. So here's my questions:-

1. When attaching these into the upvc doors, would using self-tapping screws be enough, considering the door is just plastic?
2. The outer frame is steel reinforced, so how can I cut into it to allow the female plastic claw to sink in?

Yes.

I used a multitool to cut into the frame, but something like a Dremel would also likely do the job.

It's worth making sure that your doors are properly adjusted first (you may also need to toe and heel them), you don't want to be cutting holes, and then realising your doors need to move!

I'm so sorry, but I've made a terrible mistake as I didn't wait for your reply and have ended up cutting into the door frame to fit the dog bolt. The bolt fits, but I've noticed that when the door is in close position, the rubber seal is not touching and there is around 3-4mm gap between the seal and the door. How do I adjust the door, so that it closes the gap between the frame seal and the door?


Although I have a multi-tool, I don't have a metal cutting blade, so I've used a drill to puncture multiple holes into the metal frame and removed a section big enough to allow the female claw to sink in.

Can you post a picture of the gap you want to close, and the hinges on your door - and we may be able to show you what adjustments to make on the hinges.

Please find attached multiple photo. Sorry, but from the photos, it's not very clear there is a much of a gap, but if you look for a white line, that's the gap.
