As per title, the wife wants me to put shelves in an alcove in cupboard.

I need to fix a batten to an MDF panel, what is the best way to do it. I was going to use 38mm wood for the battens (have some leftover from previous job) & the MDF is 18mm. The other two sides are brick.

The shelves are going to be 530mm wide by 300mm deep. Cheers for any replies

Ideally you'd screw through the MDF into the batten. If you can't do that then glue the batten to the MDF with a few screws to pull it tight while the glue goes off (PVA will do, as will No More Nails or anything like that).

So the MDF is a backer? And the brick is the wall depth on either side?
what are the measurements?

The batten would stop the shelf bowing, ideally the shelves would be supported on each end, using the brickwork.
Is fitting MDF onto the brick an option?
you could lose a bit of width between the brickwork by adding mdf cheeks, and routing shelf supports (or drilling precise holes in the MDF ) and using the metal shelf supports or pins.

if you can’t route a groove for the strips, but can accurately cut lengths of MDF you could screw the track to the brickwork and fill the gaps with the MDF or even use plasterboard stuck to the brickwork. This could be levelled up to the face of the strip.
