Hi Guys,

Is it acceptable to nail down the joist hangers for a new flat roof to the existing wall plate? See photo. The joist hanger straps will be at an angle as the internal brick leaf is higher than the external facing leaf.

Thank you

Too high, will not fall under PD
Why hangers at all? Just drop them straight onto the outer leaf of masonry. You will need to fit an adequate lintel over the windows/doors, unless the openings are being bricked up.

Thank you for the suggestion. Having done some research it was my understanding that that the outer leaf is not structural and load should be placed in it? Plus the facing bricks are. If very poor quality, the are very soft, you. Can make a hole in the brick with a nail.

The inner masonry is likely to be of lesser quality, lol. Both leaves go down to the same foundation. Put them on the outer leaf.

Do j need any special lintel? Or just a normal lightweight prestressed for £20?

100mm deep PCC lintels are deigned to work in composite with masonry, i.e. they need a minimum amount of masonry above, to be useful. So no, unless the openings are very narrow. A 140mm deep (heavy) fella may cut it?
Either that or fit a box catnic or some such. Not that expensive.
