I have recently had a problem with my floor lamp that I got from Ikea a few years back. The dimmer switch on it stopped working so I have just changed it to a regualr cordline switch. When I wired it up and switched it on the whole thing flashed and all 7 small 10W halogen bulbs blew. They are pronged bulbs and I believe you can get them up to 20w. Will new higher voltage bulbs fix the problem or could it be something else?

It sounds like the "dimmer switch" you replaced was actually a transformer of some sort. I don't think you can get mains voltage bulbs in the same fittings as 12V ones and even if you could the wiring probablly isn't designed to be safe at mains voltages.

If you want to keep using the lamp you will need to source a suitable new transformer and connect it up between the switch and the lamp.
