I have been given a 5 speed Dremel, 125watt. I want to control it using a foot switch. Can I use a variable speed foot switch (if I put it on max speed setting) or can I only use an on-off foot switch please?
Just a speculation, but I would think if you reduced the revolutions of your Dremel by using a resistive foot switch you'd be left with very little power to do the job.....better just have an off/on one I'd guess.

Me, I'd be looking at getting the foot switch control the PSU to vary the voltage supplied to it, not from 0v-max but from enough to provide a slow speed without knackering the drill.
If you look atthe variable speed dremels, they appear to have a potentiometer on the front panel - get the foot switch to replace this and it may work.
Would need some electronics though - and very dependent upon your drill model.
One thing though, absolutely do not attempt at varying the mains input!
