This must be costing an absolute fortune, in labour costs alone. Next door, to us, the other half of my 3 bed semi, has been completely empty, and undergoing a thorough and professional refurb. The job began in early December, and there has been someone working there most days, and incredibly - they are still there working. Two months ago, we saw furniture being delivered, and thought the end was nigh, but no, the banging and drilling soon restarted. During the same time this has been going on, I have seen entire small estates built, sold, and moved into.

You have my sympathy. Work of this type and in close proximity for such a duration can be quite wearing. Only eased if the neighbours and builders show a little consideration.

Lots of this sort of thing has gone on around by me in recent times. Not too close though. New money types from elsewhere turn up, buy a place for £500,000 then set about gutting it. Extensions and loft conversions seem obligatory. Suppose a lot of this money is borrowed or from downsizing. Some of it is from white-flight of Londoners.

Absolutely none being shown at all. They just turn up on random days, times, day, evenings, week and weekends. Parents passed away, now the off-spring have possession, they have gutted the place internally. Likely it needed it, but why such a long job?

All internal work so far.

I was guilty of this years ago when mum and I moved to a semi-detached house that needed gutted. Elderly couple living next door. I did the majority of the work myself so it took a while. I distinctly remember starting to hammer near the party wall one day and I heard 'oh blo0dy hell, not again!' from next door. On one level I couldn't blame them, elderly folk who were pretty much just in their house all day, not going out to work etc to break the monotony of hearing me work.

I had mentioned to the old boy when we moved in 'you will hear me working over the coming weeks' and he was fine with it, however the reality of hearing it day in/out was I expect somewhat different.

We got on fine thereafter though. Actually he knocked my door once to help him when his wife had slipped off her chair and he couldn't get her back up. He was fiercely independent ... and old school.

All too common these days. Brother lives in link detached bungalow. His neighbours one side decided to convert the garage into kitchen diner. It's through the wall from brother's lounge and bedroom. No consultation or notice at all. He works from home and first he knew of it was when the builder started very loud drilling other side of wall to his lounge. Being a party wall, they needed his permission, but at the very least you would have expected notice that someone would be drilling into your wall.

He was previously on good terms with these neighbours. When he got the work halted, they didn't seem to think he should have been consulted. Complete muppets.

"Hell is other people"

Which was the first we knew of it, and no word since then about any planned works.

Lots of drilling and hammering, on the dividing wall, but I'm guessing it is a cavity wall, so their wall and not subject to needing PWA?

Doesn't matter if wall is cavity or not. If it's a party wall, there are different types - A and B I believe with differeing rights and mutual responsibilities. I'm no expert though.
