The Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) in my 2-storey house often trips whenever there is thunderstorm and lightning. I live in the tropics and thunderstorm is very frequent especially during monsoon season. This is very problematic whenever i go on long vacations. I have to ask a neighbor to turn on the tripped ELCB when I am away.

What could be the possible causes of the frequent tripping of ELCB by lightning? I have another house not far away but do not experience similar problem. Could it be the sensitivity of the ELCB or could poor earthing be the cause? My house is 27 years old and single-phase while my other house is only 10 years old.

Any help and advice is appreciated :)

ELCB!!!! Get your place re-wired pronto!!!!! Then keep the ELCB and send it to me, we're trying to get one to show the new lads.

These things are archaic, dangerous and quite frankly liable to burn your house down.

Seriously get a good sparky in and have the place redone it will give you peace of mind.

Constant tripping identifies a serious fault or that the item has passed it's usful life
