Gap between top of shower tray and bottom of plasterboard

Hi everyone,
I'm clueless about this but after our last shower developed a big leak (it was 15 years old) I'm having a new one installed and the plumber put the shower tray in yesterday, cutting it in under the plasterboard, but leaving about a 2cm gap between the top of the tray and the bottom of the plasterboard. The tiler is due to come now before the plumber returns to finish the shower enclosure, but surely that gap needs filling somehow or a space will remain behind the tiles for water to seep through? Am I right to be worried?

Definitely. There should be no gap, the tray should not be cut into the wall, and the wall should not be made of plasterboard either.

It's waterproof plasterboard and the tray has a lip so the tiling goes on top of it.

Do you mean water resistant. Will still not cope if it gets wet

If it's plasterboard it will need tanking before it is tiled

That is what you need, on offer at toolstation at the moment. Fill the gap, then prime all plasterboard to be tanked with supplied primer. Bed the rubber tape in tanking paste on all joints and corners etc. Then give whole area 2 coats of tanking paste, when dry you are ready to tile. For the sake of £50, and to save ripping the plasterboard out and replacing with cement board, I would 100% do this.
