Hello all,
Basically, we have recently removed a stone fireplace that stretched the full length of the room (see photographs). We have then replastered the walls and fitted a new fireplace, presuming that as there was a gas fire fitted before that we would still be able to fit it after. However, as the previous fireplace was a lot higher, we are now left with a gap that is not tall enough for the gas fire. The gap from base of recess to the top of the back panel is 50cm, however the fire is about 53cm.
We are wondering whether we could just chisel away a few cm from the bottom of the recess to make more space. As you can see from the photograph, we have about 2 1/2 inches underneath the recess before it is level with the hearth. We arent sure whether this would cause problems above.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thomas
