all ready to try out back up generator, changeover switch, earth rod, link wire neutral earth, even energy meter but i have just noticed that the genny doesnot have an rcd do i need to have one fitted before changeover switch.

can't see any reason why as long as the genny can provide a low enough fault loop impedance to trip any relavent breakers.

However for a small generator it would be a good idea to have one for the generators protections as much as anything else and of course if there are sockets that could reasonablly supply equipment outside the equipotential zone they will need to be RCD protected somehow both when on mains and when on RCD.
