German military

Quote from a NY Times article last year about the German military and the reluctance of most Germans to fully commit to a proper modernisation. I haven't read it all. It's very long!

Taking on these NATO roles is a challenge for German forces. In the past, Germany has had difficulty scraping together the equipment and weapons it needs to take part in NATO missions. In the event of actual war, military experts say, Germany has enough munitions for maybe two days of fighting. In December, all 18 armored infantry vehicles involved in a live fire exercise broke down

German units weren't sent abroad until the war in Afghanistan and Europe has a dilemma in allowing them to develop their armed forces beyond self-defence. But, like Japan, geopolitical developments have called for a rethink on this policy as Russia grows its military capability and Korea takes pot shots across the Sea of Japan, America and the UK will need strong allies to combat this resurgence of force in the East. China bides its time.

Some props were used on a military exercise back in 2015. Well spotted.

Props are often used on simulated exercises.

Nosey, before you get even more excited - let's go back to my original post -

Did I hear somewhere recently German soldiers were practising with wooden toy guns because they didn't have enough to go around?

It was an almost throw away comment/question and I obviously wasn't completely sure of the facts of a news story from some time ago. You can tell that I wasn't 100% sure by my wording.

Filly's and my quoting of press articles showed there was some truth in what I had said. I was vaquely in the right direction.

It's all very well coming on here wanting to drill down on the minutae of what I said and split every hair - trying to hoist me by my own petard, but all along I never promised anyone total accuracy of my slightly non-serious, questioning OP. I never denied the use of props by ours or anyone else's military. I think you're getting over excited on the back of JohnD's nonsense.

Now can you run along and bother someone else please, boyo. Won't do your blood pressure any good.

Germany ranks 25 out of the top 25. They are well behind France, UK and even Spain and Turkey.

They don't seem to have the appetite for it.
