Hi all, I have been researching plaster and plasterboard wall filler for a number of cracks in my house, some ranging from hairline to wider cracks (around 3 to 6mm, due to settlement after renovating an old house). The web is a wash with different types, all with a mix of reviews. So, I have decided to ask the professionals, hence this new thread. Can any of you recommend a filler that I can rely on to work, and that will not simply sag or cause the cracks to re-appear. Thanks in advance.

  1. Solve the underlying cause of the crack
  2. Stabilise the surfaces, which may mean you need to make the crack bigger
  3. Use toupret tx110/tx140, or other prefered filler (some like the polyfiller powder).

Can't recommend toupret enough, great products. Expensive though! But it will save you time.

Thanks again, expense is not an issue. Quality results come first in my book.

If the crack is less than 1mm and there isn't much bounce, I often brush in neat wood glue (PVA) and then fill and sand.

Wider and deeper cracks- dilute PVA to seal the edge of the plaster and then gun in some Toupret Fibacryl.

It is like a caulk but has tiny fibres added to reinforce it. Like a caulk it shrinks back. I wait a day or two for it to shrink back before filling over it.

With regards to fillers. Hairline cracks I fill with Toupret RedLite (or Red Devil OneTime) and then lightly sand with 150 grit paper. It is a semi flexible lightweight filler. Unlike powdered fillers the dust doesn't cling to everything. It is about £9 for a 1L tub. It is quite soft though and so isn't suitable for high traffic areas.

Deeper/wider cracks- I normally use regular Toupret powder filler or their TX110 if I need faster drying times.

As per Swwils' video, I too use expanding foam. On my current job, I used expanding foam to "lock" the stairwell stud walls where they meet the brick/plaster party wall. The customer had extensive cracks where the walls meet at the corners. After chiselling away the loose plaster, I could see a 6mm gap between the timber studs and old plaster and noticed a slight bounce when I pushed the wall. The foam locked it and I back filled with Toupret powdered filler.

If I am in a mega rush and don't want to wait for filler to dry, I use two pack filler. A 3L tub of Upol Easy 1 is about £25.

You're welcome. That is the beauty of sites like this. I offer advice when I can, and ask others for advice when I am uncertain.
