I'd be grateful for a sanity check of my plan to lay hardboard before carpeting. There's a bit of detailing I'm unsure of and I'd appreciate some advice.
It turns out one of the rooms in our house needed a bit more renovation than expected. We've replaced a few joists, insulated, put in a vapour control layer, and then an 18mm ply subfloor. We've then over-boarded and the subfloor with the original boards (and some replacements) and screwed them down to give us the option of sanding back and having a wooden floor should we want that at any point. Right now we're going to put carpet down.
So my plan is:
Put 3mm hardboard over the floorboards - they're not very even, having wetted the hardboard and let it dry. Fit it shiny side down.
Leave a gap of 2mm or so between sheets of hardboard.
Leave a gap around the edge of the room of 30mm to allow for carpet gripper.
Across the door leave space for the threshold strip, so it goes in front of the hardboard, not on top.
Around the fireplace leave space for the threshold strip.
Fix down the hardboard with 3 x 20mm countersunk screws - so I can take it up again easily if needed.
I could use 3.6mm ply instead, if so - do I need to do any pre-treatment?
