I have had some useful responses on the height of a gravel path which I am building alongside my house. Below the gravel path I want to put a hardcore sub base as that is what has been suggested. However I am too tight to buy a load of hardcore as I have lots of rubble/gravel/old cement and bricks.

Can I break this down to form a sub base for the gravel path and how small do I need to break the stones down to? I have a lot of garden stones which I was hoping to use.

This path is to be used for light foot traffic.

I appreciate any useful advice.

Thanks

I don't think theres any strict rule to it.

Dig it out, put down a weed barrier and then put down your rubble. I'd make sure that its crushed enough so that the gravel doesn't fall through it once you put it on top.
We've got a strip down the side of the drive where we have done a similar thing but with slate and its fine

Whats the key to a good sub base for this? Is it to compact it as much as possible? Are garden stones okay to use?

The key to a good sub base is using sub base not any old crap. Sub base is a blended mix of 40 - dust which compacts properly into a nice tight surface which acts like a single layer to spread the load.

In reality you can use up your broken bricks and rubble but need to break them into pieces smaller than 3'' and combine them in amongst proper sub base.

If you try to put gravel over other gravel it will be pretty loose and unpleasant to walk on.
