...and if so, what sort of a job was it? Do they have CAN electrical systems that need a special interface box?

I can’t help with the car itself but when I fitted a towbar and electrics to my 2013 Honda CRV I just wired it via a bypass relay.
The CRV seems to have a computer for everything and I tried to test things to see what wire did what lamp (indicator, brakes etc) before I decided on a bypass relay, it just went berserk at me and needed a battery reset! It was the best option for me being a DIY’er and is easy to fit, takes the CAN system out of the equation and works very well

That's great, thanks for that. It's my sister's car and I think back then, they didn't have too many smart-arsed CAN features. I'll order the bypass relay and hopefully, all will be well!

They had can bus

Usually can buy wiring kits, but they tend to cost almost as much as the tow bar, however they are usually simple plug and plays.

See how you get on with the bypass kit though as you said
