Hi,

The decking in our back garden rotted and caved in, so we have decided to take it up and have a patio instead. We have a very sloping garden, and not much sun with a lot of algae growth, and after getting a few quotes for stone patios, we instead decided to install a gravel patio ourselves as it might help with drainage and last longer.

We have taken the decking up, and below there is just clay soil which is incredibly waterlogged. In fact right now after a bit of rain it is developing into a lake right outside our back door. I can't find that there is any drain, and the sloping garden means that all the rain runs off towards our house. We were just planning to put hardcore on top of the mud, followed by a membrane and then gravel, with wooden sleepers as a retaining wall. However there is so much standing water, that maybe we need to have a drain installed. What is your advice on whether this needs to be done, and if so how to do it?

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer.
