Hi all,

Can you please help me to try to identify if this pipe, leading from my gas meter through a room in my cellar, is asbestos wrapped? It is very difficult to see from the photos as it has been painted several times in the past but any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Many thanks.
Darren

A similar looking insulation was used on heating pipes decades ago, commonly known as "Monkey dung". Not sure if they would have used it on gas pipes, though they did use Denso tape to protect them from corrosion. By the way, the word DENSO in Japanese means thick, very apt. Get it tested just to be sure.

Isn't it a heating or water pipe - judging by its diameter - rather than gas?

I'm asking btw, not telling!

Just checked again and on the other side of the wall, it literally turns 90 degrees downwards, goes into another bendy pipe and straight into the gas meter !! It is strange though, being such a large diameter.

Testing should be fairly cheap. We use a lab near us, and its about £20.
