Hoover HNF 7167 washer flashing light code

Dear Experts,

I have a Hoover HNF 7167 washing machine. This afternoon it got into a state where it was flashing its “start” LED seven times, followed by a pause, then flashing 7 times again etc. etc. I presume this is a fault code of some sort - does anyone know what it means?

I’ve not been able to find a manual for this specific model. Manuals for other models don’t seem to include info about diagnostics like this.

I think something is wearing out. I’m not often around to hear it when it runs but I believe it is getting noisy. Today it stopped prematurely with this flashing code, and the clothes had some dark flecks on them that could perhaps be the remains of a decomposing main bearing or something.

It is more than 10 years old (it was in the house when I moved here) but has had light use from me. What’s the prognosis?

Your description suggests error code 7, but all info I can find seems a bit vague for Hoover machine. Error 7 could be the door lock, motor fault (probably worn brushes) or the wiring to either of them.
If the bearings are worn you should be able to feel play in an up/down direction if you try to move the inner drum by hand.
You could also check the door seal is not getting worn & that the pump & filter are clear of debris that may be causing the flecking.

There is a tiny bit of up/down movement but I don’t know how much would be “normal”.

Do people think this is worth trying to fix? I do have a record of trying to fix things that with hindsight I should have just replaced….

There should be some drum movement, what you need to determine from the movement is the part showing bearing movement - where it will 'clack'. There should be none at all. Also try rotating the drum and listening for a rough bearing.

Not all washer drum bearing can be replaced, some need the complete drum replacing.

If you can get an assistant to help when you or they move the inner drum the spider that the belt runs on at the back of the drum should not move at all. If it does the bearings are shot at. It's hard to say if a machine over 10 years old should be replaced, some last at a lot longer & some less. As Harry says you may find bearings are not available & you need to replace the whole drum assembly which is probably not an economic repair.

If that link works, it's a video in which you can hear the bearing noise as I spin the drum. What do you think?

There is possibly a very tiny amount of movement when I move it, but my assistant is in the pub right now so I will have to do that experiment later.
 
Sounds to me like the bearing is starting to fail but I would not have thought ti was bad enough to be causing the problems you describe. Think I would sort the error code problem before thinking of replacing the bearings/ dum assy.
 
Thanks. I agree, it sounds a bit rough - maybe it has lost its lubrication? - but it hasn’t totally decomposed.

So I wonder how to do that, as I don’t really know what it even means???
