We have a very large patch of moss, which has caused the earth underneath it to go all springy, and the rest of the lawn is made up of patches of grass and bigger patches of clover.
It looks nice and wild, but I'd really like a proper lawn.
What is the best way of getting rid of the weeds and encouraging the grass to grow properly ?
Thanks

the tv ad shows a weed and feed, it supposed to kill moss etc and feed the grass, you could always use a lawn rake to remove the moss

The best way to get rid of weeds is to weed and feed as suggested. Moss can be a real pain to get rid of permanently. There are two main causes of moss. Too shady or lack of nutrients in the soil. Shade may or may not be fixable, it depends whats causing it and whether you want to open up to more sunlight.

My recommendation is to apply weed and feed. A few days later the moss will go black. Then scarify. You can do this with a wire rake or a machine (depends how energetic you are and how big your garden is). This will rip your lawn to shreds but don't worry. It should rip out the thatch and moss. You may then need to seed and keep moist for about 3 weeks.

Top dressing your lawn every year will help to keep up the nutrient levels and keep it green and healthy.

Bottom line - a good lawn takes quite a bit of maintenance.

souns to me like your lawn doesnt drain to well.
moss also like damp spots.
what you need to do is aerate the lawn.
you can do this with a bog standard garden fork, just just sticking it in everywhere. if you have a large garden then yourll need a proper aerater on wheels.
you just roll it over and the spikes make the holes very easily.
if you have a very heavy soil or clay soil then when you next stand on the lawn you endanger filling in the holes you have just made so fill them in with a very coarse sand
