Hotpoint app support

We recently bought a HQ series american fridge freezer 2nd hand, Unfortunately we cant register it on the app to use the wifi functions because its already registered by the previous owner. Hotpoint customer service are useless and tell me ownership cannot be transferred which seems ridiculous and downright obstructive. Has anybody had any joy with anything similar?
 
The only appliance that I have is a Hotpoint heat pump tumble drier (purchased from new). The app is awful. I spent ages trying to get it work and eventually had to press a weird sequence of buttons on the machine to get it to negotiate with the wifi (I found advice on the web). The manual's instructions were incorrect (as were the instructions in the app), they suggested using NFC, and that didn't work...

Has the app explicitly told you that the fridge is registered to someone else? If yes, can you not ask the previous owner to delete it from their app?
