How is my ceiling rose/light switch functioning??

I recently changed a couple of ceiling roses for a newer ones that weren't grubby and yellow. I noticed something odd... in the fact there was only 2 cables going to them.

In previous houses I have lived at, there has always been 3. 2 which form part of the ring/circuit, and one goes to the switch. Im wondering, how on earth are the switch operating these lights?

Anyone have any ideas? I mean, the switches work, so something must be happening somewhere!

Nothing unusual - red / black pair to the left is the feed, and the pair to the right is the switch leg.

The rose in my hall has 5 T&E!! One feed in, one switch leg and three feeds out - one each to the loo, lounge and dining room. I have a recollection that my dad (retired spark) did not like more than four T&E in a rose

Makes sense, but how would it then continue on to the next ceiling rose in the circuit? Would there not need to be a feed out?

could be the last rose on the circuit. (say if you change ones upstairs and 1 downstairs)
or there could be a central supply or junction in the loft
 
Lights are not normally wired in a ring, just a straight radial. So there has to be an end one somewhere. Looks like you've found it!
