Hi all, appreciate your help on this,

I've a large new water tank in the garden.
It has a 1" brass (female) outlet

I screwed in a brass joint
it leaked

I unscrewed it, put ptfe around the thread, screwed it up again
it still leaks

What am I doing wrong?

Is there a backnut inside the plastic cistern ? I think I see a 3/4 x 1 inch brass hex bush - not a tank connector:unsure:

Excuse my ignorance, but by backnut do you mean a nut on the inside of the tank screwed onto the male fitting going into the tank? If so, then no there isn't one.

Should I be using a different fitting to screw into the tank's brass 1" female fitting, or should I have put a washer on it? I can't see how I'd put a backnut on it (if I understand correctly what that means) - the tank opening is too small to get in and is a metre away from the outlet. I needed to drill through the plastic behind the outlet, in order for the water to come out (if you see what I mean)

You are correct about a backnut. I know what you mean about the tank opening. First try what gasmanstu said.
