IBC tank (1000l) for rainwater storage?

Given you can spend upwards of £40 on a dedicated 200l water butt, yet you can pick up a second-hand IBC tank with 5 times the capacity for similar money.

Why wouldn't this be a good idea? The tanks are larger, ok- a bit 'industrial' looking, food grade and designed to be kept outside. What's not to like?

As you said the appearance but that can be easily rectified. Just make sure you don’t outlay more titifying it than you would spend on a normal garden type water butt.

I was thinking some old wooden palettes broken down and painted/stained would keep it within budget.

Further reading has suggested that the plastic needs to be light-proof to prevent algae growing - this could probably be achieved by wrapping in some way.

I was thinking about turning one of these in to a compost bin and didn't know what the actual name is for them. Now I do. Thanks!
Plan was to cut the top off, make a new lid out of and clad it with timber to improve the appearance.

If you've got the space then crack on, just make sure whatever was in it has been cleaned out.
An option somewhere near the bottom of my job list is to bury a couple for rainwater storage, obv need pumped output and haven't sorted how to deal with overflow.
