Do I need planning permission to erect a lean-to?

As far as I know as long as the lean to is not joined to the house by brick then planning permission is not required. ie as long as the bricks from the house arent meshed in with the ones from the lean to.

YES IS RIGHT AS ABOVE BUT NOT TO HIGH AND KNOW MORE THAN 3MS FROM OUTSIDE AND TELL NIEBOURS

Please ask your planning department before you erect ANYTHING! It will not cost you anything and they will not charge you for advice...
I have recently constructed what could be called a lean-to and i did not tie in the bricks (but used wall ties) - i needed planning AND building regs.
It is better safe than sorry - they could tell you to tear it down...
