My china RTV has failed after a small number of years and my engine is leaking oil. I don't have any previous experience of RTV and could not tell if the china RTV was crap. Unlike bathroom silicone, the cured RTV was harder and would break from bending. Is cured engine RTV supposed to be similar to bathroom silicone and remain non-brittle?

RTV is just Room Temperature Vulcanisation.

It is a form of Silicone, but there are umpteen types

RTV usually refers to engine gasket maker. I am wondering if the cured RTV is characteristically different to bathroom silicone? You can't break silicone by bending it 90 degrees. The RTV I used did break that way. Is this normal or I used junk?

RTV (Room Temperature Vulcanisation) is a form of silicone. It is not specifically for Engine Gaskets, but is very suitable for them as it begins to cure at room temperature, meaning you can actually make a basic gasket with it and then put it into place. Its usually used as normal jointing compound and used in place and then squeezed up though.

Sounds like you bought cheap and junk. It's not normally cheap.

The junk lasted 3 years, falling short of my lifetime durability expectation. I will try a local one next.
