I haven't got a clue what asbestos looks like but the misses had a freak out when I pulled up the floorboards in our Victorian home. Anyone care to enlighten us on whether this is just an accumulation of years of crap or whether it actually looks like asbestos to you?

I'm not an expert so if in any doubt contact someone from your local council to be absolutely 100% sure that it isn't - don't mess with this stuff

However it does just look like the top view of some lath and plaster. I have never seen asbestos that looks like that.

Yes, agree with the above, a standard lath & plaster ceiling from above.
If you decide to strip it out and fit plaster boards make sure you have a good quality dusk mask that fit snugly. These old ceilings often contained horse hair fibres to help adhesion and bond the plaster together. It may also contain lime from the old days when ceilings were often 'white washed' instead of painted but it's not dangerous unless you start eating it.

Yeah and it contains cow dung too !!!!!

Only joking, but it is and was used

Get an Asbestos surveyor to come and sample it, loose fill insulation can contain asbestos. It should be a legal requirement ( Just like commercial property) to get an asbestos survey report and you would know where the asbestos is if any

I dread to think how much krap I have inhaled in my working life.....
