Kitchen Hood duct

In our kitchen there is a fan extractor on the ceiling that is connected to outside. There is nothing above the cooker. No hood at all. Just a fan in the ceiling to extract fumes. A nightmare really.

We did buy circulatory hood with charcoal filter which is useless basically. Definitely need a proper hood with outside connection.

We want to install a kitchen hood and ducts to extract fumes to outside. There is a rectangular grove in the wooden frame above the ceiling. Not sure if we will have to take down the ceiling to install the duct.

Above the ceiling there is a grove to run rectangular duct from cooker to the outside vent. I have looked through the fan hole and seen the grove for installing the duct. The duct will have to be around 1 m long. Not sure if it can be installed with taking down the ceiling.

Any suggestion will be highly appreciated.

I have a similar challenge.

Still investigating options, but I have been thinking of using either flexible ducting or flelxible flat ducting to minimize the hole in the ceiling.

A builder and kitchen fitter came yesterday to look at it. He inspected it and found that it is impossible to do ducting over the ceiling. There is no space there at all to run rectangular ducting. He has offered two options:

1. Take out the ceiling, make holes in joist and run ducting through it.

2. Run ducting under the ceiling. It will look bad but cheaper option.

Why not post pics & indicate the direction of the joists?

What "make holes in joists" means I dont understand - you have to be v. cautious about cutting into joists.

Here is the kitchen layout. Hoists run from left to right. Current exhaust hole on the wall is above the Sink (Window). I will take some pictures and upload it later.
