Kitchen Unit Heat/Steam Protection

We have 'appliance garages' in our kitchen to try and keep toaster/kettle etc off worktops.
We rarely use toaster or kettle but missus has got into habit of daily coffees from her posh coffee machine and that means a lot of hot steam rising up onto underside of unit right immediately above. What's the best way to protect units? Something like this? :

Or are there any other products / alternative solutions? Obviously we want to avoid moving the machine out on to worktop if poss.

Not a disaster yet but one in the making when the steam starts blowing up the base/walls of those units.

The only fix, is to ensure the items are pulled well out of their 'garages'. Our kettle was simply under a unit, completely open around it, yet it still managed to cause a problem to the wall cupboard base above it.

At a pinch, something like a 240v fan - as used to be used on mainframe computers, would maybe do it - set to come on when ever the door is opened.
 
Unless it well sealed I would be as concerned about WT spills and condensed steam running down the side swelling the bottom

Thanks for all your suggestions.
Unfortunately there's not enough worktop in front of the 'garage' to sit the tray clear of the opening and as someone has said, the steam would rise up to hit the side of the open door. Its a bit drastic but I think the only solution is to have a small extract fan and also possibly line it with either tiles or plastic wall panelling.
Garage idea seemed a great one at the time!
