Laminate and Underlay on Ground suspended timber floor

Hi All,

Having always lived in new and newer builds with solid floors, I'm not as familiar with best course of action for the following.

Early 1970s detached house with suspended timber floor. We've recently insulated it with mineral wool between the joists from below. The missus has decided on which laminate flooring she wants for the lounge. Floor is original T+G about 115x20mmm.

Any suggestions for a suitable underlay? In previous houses I had used heavy Duralay Timbermate Excel, though wondering if it's suitable for suspended ground floors?

Tmibermate Excel is the best underlay you can use and superior to fibre boards as it's firmer and denser but with the foil backing, more suited to Concrete subfloors. The sister product is Multitex which is the same spec but without the foil backing so it won't encourage the wood subfloor to sweat. Check out the Duralay website for full specs of the two products.

I was skeptical of using anything with a DPM because of potential sweating/moisture gathering against the original floorboards, so multitex might be a good shout, I wonder if it's the same as the Duralay Silent Floor underlay they do in B&Q...
