Laptop with Alzheimer's

Hi Folk's.
I'm running a laptop with a 37gig capacity and quickly running out of space.
I mainly use it for photo's and a very small amount of work in 'Word'

To claw some memory back I have reduced my recovery point and cleaned out a few photo's and folders, including some unused programs and defragged, doing this has given me 6gig back.

When I click on My Doc's folder which includes my photo's as well as Word doc's it shows 11gig ... were the other 26gig is I'm puzzled.

Is it possible to have everything duplicated ? why I ask is, if I click on My Computer and explore C: I am given a list that is headed by Desktop and under shows all my folders, scroll half way down it then say's Local drive C: and list's everything again.

Given the nature of the question you'll appreciate I'm alien to what goes on under the keyboard.

The My Documents folder only contains what it says - your documents, including your photo's. If that's occupying 11 gig of your 37 gig drive, and you have 6 gig free space(?), then the other 20 gig is taken up by Windows and all the programs you have installed on your system.

if you have photos that you want to keep, copy them onto CDs or DVDs. Apart from enabling you to then delete them from the hard drive, it will mean that you have an archived copy when your hard drive fails (they all do, eventually)

You can also buy a plug-in external hard drive that will greatly increase your storage space.

Just to clarify JohnD's post :-

If you copy your photo's to an external drive or DVD's, and then subsequently delete them from your internal hard drive, you won't have an archived backup copy - you'll still have only 1 copy of your photo's, it'll just be held somewhere other than your main hard drive. So if you wanted to free up space on your internal hard drive and also wanted to keep backup copies of your photo's you would need 2 external drives, or alternatively have 1 set of your photo's on 1 external drive and burn additional copies of your photo's to good quality DVD's. And store them somewhere separately if you're serious about backups. You'd feel a bit disappointed if you'd taken multiple backup copies of your important data, kept them all together in the same place and were all destroyed by the same fire, for example....

All this will be sorted by now but another option is an online hard drive.
Best just google it for the latest details.
I went the USB H/D route and it cost less than £80 for 500 Ghz.
It also means that, should you wish to travel with your photos then just take the H/D with you.

Hello CC.
Not quite sorted but deleted a substantial amount of photo's which has given me a few gig back for the time being.
I have a 'Seagate' unit that I use for my PC and laptop backups and considered one of the newer pocket HD's.
My intention is to do away with the two computers and get a reliable lap top with a reasonable capacity, plus an external HD to match.

I'm conscious of not responding to the original post but to be fair I have not totally resolved the problem.

You can try using a powertoy to reduce file size of pix if only being viewed on-screen.

Try this, you'll soon see what's what - or maybe not.

Depends the degree wor lass is measuring ... size / frequency

All I need now is the verdict of which lap top.

Sounds like you don't have time for a laptop.........or does "laptop" mean something else up there.

Sounds like you don't have time for a laptop.........or does "laptop" mean something else up there.

The extreme cold weather has a detrimental effect, Laptop, softwear, I think we are still on topic
