Hi,
I’m building a folding kayak using ply and canvas. The plans call for latex paint, because it’s flexible and of course waterproof. It seems to be very expensive and I wondered if anyone knew of a cheaper but still effective alternative. I’m not overly fussed about the colour. I’m assuming that normal gloss paint will crack as the canvas forms the folds of the kayak.

Coracal used tar but not sure where one gets tar now? In the days of coal gas it was no problem tar and creosote were in plentiful supply. May be charcoal maker tar must be a by-product.

However as it dried out it made the Coracal skin wrinkle I expect this would produce water resistance. Not really a problem for salmon fishing.

Hi Ericmark,
Thank you for your reply. I think I’ll go with exterior varnish for waterproofing the canvas. It says on the tin that it’s flexible and that important as the canvas has to flex.
