We're planning to put a new wood floor in the dining room, which at the moment is just some old painted chipboard. I've read that although chipboard isn't the ideal base, it can work OK and it would save having to take it all up. Should I put plywood down first or use paper felt (or both)? I would prefer to nail the floorboards down (maybe "secret nail") rather than glue if possible.

You can’t nail a wood floor to chipboard. Plywood 1st then screw it down.
My entire ground floor (60 sq m) is solid oak, floated on weyroc.. Been down years without issue.
That's good to know - maybe a floating floor is the way to go. I guess the weyroc was nice and level to start with. Our chipboard isn't, which is why I wondered about putting plywood down first. If I do this, does anyone know if I'll need anything between the plywood and the floating wood floor (or if the ply should be treated with some kind of primer first)?
