LG washing machine bearing removal

Hi, I'm changing the bearings on my machine as the inner bearing had collapsed. I'm having trouble getting the old ones out. I'm left with the outer race of the larger inner bearing, and the whole of the smaller outer bearing.

I've been hammering away at the outer one through from the inside with a socket extension and a chisel but it hasn't budged a millimetre.

Trying the same technique on the inner bearing from the outside is much the same. I was hoping if I got the outer one off I could see better into the hole to get at the inner one.

Any tips on how to get these stubborn things out?

Model is LG WM12230FB.
 
OK, here's some pics. I've had WD40 soaking in for a few hours but still no joy. The first one shows just after removing the seal, (before I got the hammer out)

You could use a metal drift. Looks like a copper tube but made of metal to try and move it. Or can you get a dremel in there to cut at the bearing race. Otherwise it's a new rear half needed.
 
Sometimes, gently warming the bearing housing will work, it will make it expand slightly.
Otherwise, you may need to hire / buy a bearing puller.
As above, yes sometimes you can just cut the bearing. It reduces the tension of the friction fit.

Ok I'll try the dremel method.

I had a look for rear tub and seems difficult to get for this model, and similar ones seem more than half way to a new machine. I think I've got till the weekend or it'll be a trip to the retail park.
 
Brilliant Fender, thanks. Heat gun on the small outer bearing housing for a few minutes, then bashed through from the inside again with the socket extension and out it popped, as if to say "What was all the hammering for?"

now for the harder bit, the remnants of the outer race of the inner bearing.
 
Struggling now. spent a while last night alternately heating and bashing at the inner bearing but no joy. I've also attacked it with the Dremel as in this pic. The problem is there's only the outer race left of it, so only the smallest of edges to hammer at going through from the other side - too narrow for a cold chisel so I can only just catch the edge with a screwdriver. Using the dremel has cut some grooves but it's tricky to get a good angle on it. I'm also conscious of not wanting to slice into the surrounding metal .

I'll have another go again later, I've left it soaked in more WD40 for now.

Remote help is always hard - even a photo only helps to a point. Can you get hold of a bearing puller?
 
Hi again,

no I don't know anyone who has one, but not really sure what I'm looking for. I've had a quick look online but can't see exactly what would do the job. Would it grip enough just on the concave surface of the outer rac, or would it have sharp enough "claws" to just get behind the back the race?

If I could buy it cheaply I'd have a go. Do you know what type should work in these cases.

I've also tried heating again but I can't see how to heat the surrounding metal without the stuck race heating as well, and presumably expanding with the surround. I could try and wedge some ice in and heat the tube from the other end.
 
I'll have a look for you tmrw. Pullers can be found cheap on the bay.
Aluminium will heat up much quicker than the steel of the bearing.

As I say, I'll have a look for you.
Two of my engineers next week have to remove and change a bearing set the size of your car...:ROFLMAO:
It's not easy buddy - every different job has it's issues.........;)
 
Hey Fender, thanks for your tips and encouragement. After a couple of hours tonight alternately heating, hammering and dremelling a little piece chipped off, then a couple more blows and out it popped. You can see the state of it.

Ill give it all a good clean and rebuild it all tomorrow. Now I'm having a beer , I owe you one!

OK, now building it up. The bearing seal has a spring coiled round one side, and on the other face there is a sort of flexible lip round the outer edge and another on the inner edge. Can anyone help with which side faces the bearing?IMG_3294.JPG IMG_3293.JPG
