Will be installing RCD, maybe more than one, close to the wall mounted switches for the kitchen, bath and hot water unit. Present CU has no room for RCD so i will put the RCD in a 'box' between the switches and the CU. Does this plan make sense and, besides buying a new CU, how else to do it?

Are the circuits you want to protect spurs, or part of the ring main (assuming HK electrics are the same as UK)? If they are spurs, you should be fine putting the RCD in a separate box, although bear in mind that both phase and neutral have to go through the RCD. If your installation is "star-wired", why not put the RCD in the consumer unit?
